Last Second Transfer Portal Entry Stuns Utah State

The transfer portal window in the college basketball world closed officially on May 1^st after a 45-day time period.

So, imagine the shock of Utah State hoops fan when they were informed on the morning of May 2^nd that Josh Uduje was in the transfer portal.

Those 8.7 points a game last year were enough to qualify for fifth most points per game at USU last year.

Uduje was top 5 in minutes played, field goals attempted, three pointers attempted, free throws made and attempted, and assists last year on a team that was as high as #16 in the AP polls and won a tournament game.

The former Coastal Carolina Chanticleer finished his first season in Logan shooting 42.5 percent from the field and 27.5 percent from downtown.

Fair to say, he was a crucial part of what the Aggies accomplished last season alone.

Now, in all fairness, the transfer portal request was made prior to the deadline:

Either way though, it caught Utah State faithful off guard to see the co-sixth man of the year hop back into the portal so late.

Utah State had added several guards over the last little bit, and its possible Uduje didn’t see the same fit for himself that he saw a month ago.

It isn’t just Utah State who is hurting in terms of what’s left via the portal but the entirety of the Mountain West.

Per 247 sports, more than 2,000 players entered the transfer portal this year, and per The Athletic, more than 1,000 of those were division one players.

It’s a unique time in college sports, and basketball is no exception.

Only time will tell how Coach Calhoun and the Aggies adjust the bench rotation with a likely departure in Uduje.
