New ideas for your kitchen come and go, but one thing that has always been consistent is that all your countertops match. A new trend that does away with this tradition is inspiring some and unsettling others.

The Island is Granite and the Under the Cabinets Counter is Marble

To create interest and focus on different parts of the kitchen, a new trend mixes the countertops. If you have an island, you might see a darker stone with whiter countertops surrounding it.

Even a countertop that has two levels may now feature one in a toned-down color on the lower level and something with a lot of pattern or color on the top. This mixing of countertops can be jarring when you first see it.

Balancing Colors and Patterns is Important

If you are going to mix your countertops in the kitchen, you should make a plan beforehand. It can be easy to make your kitchen look way too busy. If both kinds of tops have a lot of patterns in them, it can look cluttered to the eye.

You could balance this with solid cabinets. You should also be careful with the different colors involved. I personally do not love this new trend for this reason. It seems like the colors get wacky.
