Spotlight on Southern Utah’s Birdwatching Celebrities

Some celebrities have landed in Southern Utah and are creating a stir with local people who have spotted them. I’m talking about the Great Blue Herons that have made their nests along the Virgin River in Washington.

Great Blue Herons are large wading birds that can be found near lakes and rivers. Their habitat stretches from Alaska to South America. They are around 5 ft. tall with long legs and a wingspan that can reach 7 ft. The blue feathers on their wings set them apart.

Nesting Habitats: Where to Find These Birds

These birds have made three nests in a tree next to the Virgin River in Sullivan Park in Washington. That is the one with all the soccer fields just off 300 East. If you do stop to see these visitors, stay back and don’t disturb their nesting.

If you want to see the Great Blue Heron nesting with their young, there is an event taking place in Farmington with the Division of Wildlife Resources where there is a rookery where these birds nest every year.

The event will happen on April 18th from 11 to 3 p.m. at the Eccles Wildlife Education Center and there will be a biologist on hand giving information and answering questions. Even better, it is free to the public although they are asking for a can of food for the food bank.

If you don't want to travel to Farmington, you can make your own event by heading to Sullivan Park. Take a pair of binoculars and see these blue celebrities that have stopped for a visit.
