Chapter 11 Playground Threats 67
Jonathan felt panic rise up in him. He looked to the woman who was now standing in the middle of the playground checking her watch. She glanced at him with a certain amount of disgust on her face, then returned to looking at her wrist. It was just the sort of thing that Jonathan had worried about since he had begun attending school.

He spent the rest of the day fretting about what he was going to do and what would happen if he didn’t have the money to give Bronco. He couldn’t concentrate in the rest of his classes and by the time the nanny picked him up, he was a bundle of nerves, on the verge of crying.
He got in the backseat where Solomon was sitting. With his brother looking at him with those concerned, clear blue eyes, Jonathan immediately felt his breathing start to calm and his tense muscles began to loosen.
As the car pulled out, he quietly described what had happened on the playground to his younger brother. Solomon asked him some probing questions about Bronco and the other two boys.

“Does he talk that way to other kids?” asked Solomon.
Jonathan had no idea. He had never paid that much attention to what was happening to other kids in school. “I don’t know.”
“What kind of clothes was he wearing?” his brother asked.
Getting Into the Head of Jonathan's Bully
These questions seemed pretty advanced for a five-year-old Jonathan thought, but not that surprising for Solomon. “His shirts are too big,” Jonathan answered. “And his pants are ripped.”
Solomon nodded, thinking.
Trusting that his younger brother had a purpose in finding out the information, he said, “Do you think he really does own the rocks?”
Solomon laughed. “No, he’s unhappy though.”
Jonathan thought about this the rest of the way home.
