Views on legalizing recreational use of marijuana are changing in Utah. KSL reports that for the first time a majority of Utahns support it. At the same time, new studies have come out that reveal new dangers from THC, especially for adolescents. 

Heart Attack and Stroke Risk Increase with Marijuana Use 

There is bad news dribbling out of the media on a regular basis. The latest study says that using marijuana increases your chance of dying of heart disease by double. It also increases the chance of a stroke by 20%. 

Another study looked at how cannabis effects young people and specifically their brain function. They saw as much as 63% decrease in memory capacity. There has also been an increase in mental issues such as schizophrenia in developing brains.

Support for Legalized Pot Grows in Utah While it Lessens in Legal States 

These are just the latest studies and there are many more that have come out in the last few years. In many states where marijuana was legalized the tide is turning and more of the public sees it as a negative. 

It is ironic that in Utah there is more support for recreational marijuana use while in states that were the first to make things legal are starting to change their minds. In this case, it might have been a good thing that Utah was late to the party.

Utah has already made medical marijuana legal. Now instead of taking the same path as other states in legalizing recreational use, maybe we should slow down. Let’s see how this plays out before following the trajectory of legal cannabis states.
