This winter seems odd in Utah. It was warmer than usual in December and the first of year has seen snow in the mountains and rain in the valleys. Is this just a case of presentism or is there really something different going on?

Polar Vortex Started to Wobble Early This Year

There is a storm system over the North Pole where cold air circles in a tight vortex. As winter goes on, warm air begins to infiltrate the spinning cold air, and it wobbles like a top. When this happens, cold air can escape and move lower.

These are the atmospheric rivers that bring cold air and storms through Canada and into parts of the United States. These patterns have been studied by meteorologists for years, and they make predictions from these models.

Things Got Started Earlier This Year

What is different about the end of 2025 and going into 2026 is that this pattern began earlier than usual. It isn’t totally unprecedented, but it is rare. This means the polar vortex experienced warm air and began to wobble.

This is why some parts of the United States like Utah saw warmer weather than usual in December. At the same time, storms systems moved into California in the form of an atmospheric river delivering rain across the west into Utah.

Because this is such a rare occurrence, modeling what will happen next is not as easy. It might be a good idea to prepare for the unexpected.
