It won’t be long until you are pulling the cover off your grill and cooking some burgers or a flame broiled steak. Before you get started, inspect this common grilling tool and toss it if it looks like it is worse for wear. In fact, maybe get rid of it all together.

Simple Mistake Can Result in an Emergency Room Visit

Many people clean their outdoor barbecue grill using a wire-bristle tool. The wires get between the grates and remove the build up from the last time you grilled. The problem is when the brush gets old, and the wire bristles begin to fall off.

One of these small wires can go unnoticed and end up in a patty. Soon a family barbecue can result in an expensive trip to the hospital and even an extensive stay after surgery to get the small wire removed.

It is bad if the bristle harms your mouth or chips a tooth, but if it gets into the throat, it can get sideways. Even worse if it gets stuck in the stomach or the intestines can be really serious. There have been cases where all of the above have happened.

Other Options Than a Bristle Grill Brush

If you want to avoid the danger, there are other ways to clean your grill. A pumice stone can be used to scrape it clean, though this is kind of hard to get between things. There are bristle brushes made from nylon.

In the linked article the guy recommends lemon or half an onion cut in half to get the grime off. Or you can use a piece of aluminum foil. You could also remove the grates and scrub them in the sink.

I still use a brush but it is sturdier with bigger wire bristles. When it starts to look at all worn, I get a new one. I have no desire to feed anyone but tasty grilled meat when I’m cooking.

The iconic (and at times silly) toys, technologies, and electronics have been usurped since their grand entrance, either by advances in technology or breakthroughs in common sense. See how many things on this list trigger childhood memories—and which ones were here and gone so fast you missed them entirely.
