Here’s a Look at Once Popular Ski Resorts That Didn’t Make it In Utah
A ski resort named Snowland near Fairview, Utah opened up again after years of being closed through the efforts of some volunteers and a non-profit. It made me wonder about other ski resorts that have come and gone in Utah.
Utah’s History with Skiing Began in the 1800s
The beehives state’s fascination with skiing began in 1870 when Norwegian immigrants brought it to Utah. It continued to grow through the 1920s and really took off with ski jumping events in the 1930s.
There have been many ventures to provide a place for people to ski over the years. Some of these became the big resorts we know today. Some of them didn’t last quite as long and, unlike Snowland, are still waiting for their redemption.
Twelve Lost Ski Areas from Utah’s Past
A site dedicated to documenting some of the state’s former attempts at making ski hills shows some fascinating history. Some of the more successful attempts were in smaller Utah towns like Vernal and Monticello.
These smaller town resorts were popular like Blue Mountain that thrived in Monticello starting in 1950 and all the way to 1990. There was really low snowfall that year and probably contributed to the end of the resort.

Grizzly Mountain was in Vernal and began in 1960. It also closed down in the low snow year of 1990 and because many people were traveling to Park City to ski. Visit the site to see pictures of these early resorts in Utah.
