If you want to sell a good used car for under $5,000 right now, you will have buyers lined up around the block. Even vehicles under $10,000 are hard to come by. What experts thought would be a soft start to the year in this market turned out to be anything but.

Soaring Demand for Budget-Friendly Used Cars

The market for good lower priced used cars is as strong in Southern Utah as it is in the rest of the country.

I talked with Jared Hardy who runs Southwest Auto Recycling in Washington. “The used car market is so unpredictable,” said Hardy. “People want a good car under $5 grand, and it is near impossible to find one.”

The Selling Advantage: Capitalizing on High Demand

This is good news if you are looking to sell a used car. You can expect to get more because of the high demand. If you are trying to buy a cheaper used car, it is going to be tough. You might have to look at different alternatives until the market loosens up.

What is driving the current demand? Consumers are realizing higher than expected tax returns and are looking for new transportation. The changes to the tax code last year are giving people more money to spend.

The unrest in the middle east doesn’t seem to have dampened people’s confidence in the economy, and it looks like demand for used cars will stay strong heading into summer. Like Hardy says, the car market is unpredictable, and you might find waiting to buy beneficial.
