There’s a kind of opal found only in Utah, and there’s a place where rock enthusiasts can collect their own. If you love collecting and polishing rocks and crystals, you might need to put a trip to Milford on your list.

Understanding Opal: The Mineraloid Definition

Opal is considered a mineraloid which means it is a hard rock-like structure that comes from an organic substance. It doesn’t have a crystalized structure like a mineral. Amber would be an example.

In Milford there is a place called the Rock Dream Claim where you can find something called bubble opal. At this location silica water seeped into the rock anciently and made these unique opals found only in this part of the world.

The Unique Features of Utah's Bubble Opal

What makes these special is the wide variety of opals. Some look like a piece of bacon. Others have a bubble-like surface, and the colors are rich and stunning. Adding light that shines through the surface makes something spectacular.

The area where the opals are found is an unsuspecting rise in the central Utah desert. This knoll has an area of exposed rock and many of the opal layers are sitting on the surface.
