Cedar City Is Gonna Get Lit!
The holiday spirit is about to light up Cedar City as the highly anticipated Downtown Lighting Ceremony takes place this Saturday. From festive markets to dazzling displays, the event promises a full day of seasonal cheer, capped off with the iconic illumination of Main Street and a Santa fly-in via helicopter.
A Day of Festivities
Brandon Burk, Events Director for Cedar City, was on the radio with us and described the festivities as a hallmark of Cedar City’s community spirit. “This Saturday is all about creating that small-town Christmas magic,” Burk said. “It’s an atmosphere you don’t find anywhere else. People often say it feels like walking into a Hallmark movie.”
The celebration kicks off with a Christmas market from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Held indoors at The Venue (the former Main Street movie theater), the market features local and regional vendors offering handmade crafts, holiday decor, and treats.
Outdoor activities begin at 3 p.m., with Center and Main Streets transforming into a winter wonderland. “We’ll have live reindeer, bounce houses, crafts for kids, face painting, and plenty of food trucks,” Burk explained. “We’re also thrilled to offer free carriage rides this year, with a suggested donation to benefit Iron County Care and Share.”
Lighting Up Main Street
The main event begins at 5 p.m., with live performances directed by Scott Phillips and choreographed by world-renowned Mick Thompson. “We’ve got singers, dancers, and a violinist, plus performances by local children’s groups,” Burk shared.
The highlight? Santa’s dramatic arrival by helicopter, landing on Main Street just in time to light up the city’s decorations. “SUU Aviation has been incredible in helping us pull off this unique tradition,” said Burk. “It’s truly a sight to see Santa stepping out of a helicopter in the middle of Main Street.”
Following the lighting and a fireworks display, Santa will be available for photos at the Heritage Theater. Visitors can also enjoy a live nativity scene at the Old Rock Church and stroll under candy cane arches for even more holiday charm.
Community Support
Burk emphasized the importance of community involvement in making the event a success. “We’re still looking for volunteers to help with everything from setting up to running activities,” he noted. “It’s a massive effort that really showcases the generosity and spirit of Cedar City.” Volunteers receive a free sweatshirt and a meal as thanks for their time.
With attendance expected to reach over 6,000 people, Burk encouraged visitors to dress warmly and enjoy the festive atmosphere. “It might be cold, but between the fire barrels, patio heaters, and the sheer energy of the crowd, you’ll feel the warmth of the season,” he said.
