10,000 Gather For Cedar City’s Magical Lighting Ceremony
The Magic has begun.
At least if we accept the premise of the Cedar City Downtown Lighting Ceremony theme of “Where The Magic Begins.” Saturday night certainly could be described as magical.
As Cedar City community members seem to do when an event is going on in town, they showed up in great numbers. Early estimates have the crown at around 10,000 people.
I've been watching events like this for the years I've been here in town, and I'm no longer surprised when big crowds show up, even if the conditions aren't optimal.
Cold, But No Snow
To be sure, the snow that had been forecast earlier in the week did not materialize, so that was not a factor. Still, as the sun was dropping below the western horizon, temperatures plummeted rapidly to a chilly evening. But the cool temperature did not diminish the warmth of the crowd.
Nights like the Downtown Lighting Ceremony fill a vital purpose. These events allow residents to meet new people, share ideas, and celebrate common interests. They also create opportunities for neighbors who might never cross paths—students, retirees, newcomers, longtime residents—to talk, collaborate, and discover shared concerns or goals. That simple act of showing up helps bridge divides and reminds people that they are part of something larger than themselves.
By the time we got there, the streets were packed. The activities started about Noon with the opening of the Christmas Marketplace, which featured some 70 vendors this year. The Utah Shakespeare Festival was offering carriage rides around their facilities staring at 3:30, and on stage entertainment started around 4:30.
And of course, this was all leading up to the arrival of Santa Claus, and then the turning on of the downtown lights. There was one hiccup in the evening. A banner came loose as the helicopter was attempting to land, and in an abundance of caution, the landing was waved off, and Santa had to make his arrival downtown via a police escort.
After Santa made his way to the stage, he led the countdown to throw the switch to turn on the downtown Christmas lights. After the lights came on, those in attendance were treated to a fireworks show that lit up the night.

Even if there were not any disappearing wizards or witches casting spells, there certainly a lot of magic in the air.
