Capture Your Love For Cedar City This February
So, January went flying by and now here we are in February, widely recognized as the Month of Love. Of course, romance will be, or at least should be in the air on Valentines Day on the 14th, and Patriots or Seahawks fans could have a lot to love depending on who wins the big game this weekend. We can love the days getting longer. We can love the anticipation of spring (not that this winter has been harsh at all, so far). We can love that baseball players will so be returning to training for the upcoming season.
Yep, there's lots of things to love this month of February.
But what about where we live?
Celebrating Community Spirit In Cedar City
Expressing appreciation for the community we live in may not seem like a high priority. Some of us are here only for a short time (think SUU students), some of the youth may have a burning desire to leave and explore other parts of the world. And sometimes we just don't think about the places we live...it's just a place. But is it?
That's why every year during this Month of Love, Cedar City sponsors the Love Where You Live campaign. It gives community members a chance to express what they love about living here in town. Oh yeah, and you can win some cool prizes.
You may have noticed the big LOVE display in the Mayor's Square. The core of the Love where You Live program centers around a social media photo campaign where you are invited to take a picture with the display, the post on Facebook or Instagram and explain what you love about living in Cedar City. Doing so puts you in a drawing to win prizes donated by downtown businesses. As a bonus, you can show you post at the utility counter at City Hall to get a commemorative sticker.
And kids get involved, too. The city partners with the Iron County School District for third graders to participate in an essay contest where students to what the love about living in Cedar City. Last year, 270 entries were submitted, and choosing the winners was a bit of a challenge.

In a world where, at least as far as I'm concerned, social media is pushing us to tell about what is wrong in our lives and the surroundings we live in, I think this could be a nice counterbalance.

I know, every community has issues to be addressed and improved. We are no exception. But, to be honest, I do love where I live, and have no hesitancy in stating that. This town has felt like home from the first time I set foot in it, and I can't imagine living any where else.
