Rachel Erwin Champions Cedar City’s Vibrant Downtown Growth
Cedar City’s historic downtown remains a focal point for community identity and economic vitality, and Rachel Erwin is working to ensure it stays that way. As the city’s Historic Downtown Main Street Coordinator, a position created in October, Erwin serves as a liaison between the city and its small businesses, while also organizing events and pursuing opportunities to enhance the district.
“My job is just to make our downtown historic Main Street as best as it can, promoting our small businesses, planning events, helping out with historic grants, just everything that has to do with our downtown,” Erwin said during an appearance on the Big Picture Morning Show on KSUB radio.
The designated downtown area stretches from 200 North to Center Street, with ongoing discussions about expanding its footprint further toward Coal Creek. Within that space, Erwin focuses on encouraging both business retention and growth, while highlighting the district as a walkable destination for visitors and residents alike. The addition of a new hotel in the downtown area, she noted, is already helping draw attention to Cedar City as a tourism hub, placing visitors within easy reach of restaurants, outdoor recreation and summer events such as the Utah Shakespeare Festival.
A key part of Erwin’s approach involves hosting events designed not just to take place downtown, but to actively involve local businesses. She pointed to a Thanksgiving event called Thankful on Main as an example of how community participation can directly benefit merchants. Her latest effort follows a similar model, with an emphasis on outdoor recreation.
City Wants Your Input On Outdoor Recreation
An upcoming community event on Thursday, April 30 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Main Street Park will bring together food vendors, recreation groups and city representatives, while also serving as a platform for public input. “This is one of those really fun events where I feel like it’s kind of rare, but the community gets to, quite easily, give their feedback to us and what they really want to see,” Erwin said.
The event is designed to gather perspectives from a wide range of outdoor enthusiasts, from cyclists to rodeo participants to golfers. City officials will collect feedback on recreation needs and priorities, with surveys remaining available for a month following the event.

Erwin also highlighted the role of the Historic Downtown Economic Committee, which meets monthly and includes business owners, city officials and economic development leaders. Together, they help guide decisions tailored specifically to the downtown area.
While Cedar City continues to grow, Erwin emphasized the importance of preserving its historic core. Drawing on her experience from a rapidly expanding community near Washington, D.C., she underscored the risks of losing that character. Maintaining a vibrant, accessible downtown, she suggested, will remain central to the city’s future.
