Plan Your Zion National Park Visit During Transition To Winter

As autumn transitions to winter, Zion National Park continues to dazzle visitors with its stunning scenery, but seasonal changes also bring important updates to shuttle schedules, campground availability, and visitor services. The National Park Service (NPS) urges travelers to plan ahead for a safe and enjoyable experience.

Thanksgiving weekend draws heavy crowds, with lengthy waits for shuttles, long lines at entrance stations, and heavy traffic in Springdale and throughout the park. Visitors should remain patient and prepared for a bustling atmosphere.

Fall shuttle service in Zion ends on Sunday, Dec. 1, 2024. From Dec. 2 to Dec. 19, private vehicles may access the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive, but parking is limited and closures may occur when lots reach capacity. Holiday shuttle service resumes on Dec. 20 and runs through Dec. 29, during which private vehicles are prohibited on the scenic drive. After Dec. 30, private vehicles may return to the route. Shuttle operations will resume in the spring of 2025.

For campers, Watchman Campground remains open year-round with reservations available up to six months in advance. However, Lava Point Campground is closed for the season, and South Campground is undergoing construction. Visitors are encouraged to secure accommodations in advance.

Zion Canyon Visitor Center operates daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., while Kolob Canyons Visitor Center follows slightly reduced hours. Wilderness permits can be obtained at the Zion Canyon Wilderness Desk, which adjusts its hours seasonally.

Winter brings chilly temperatures, with nights near freezing and Virgin River water temperatures below 50°F. Visitors should dress in layers and check conditions before venturing out.

Parking fills quickly year-round, and road closures may occur due to congestion. The park reminds guests to practice Leave No Trace principles, stay on trails, and be mindful of cyclists and pedestrians. Weekdays or late afternoons generally offer smaller crowds, making for a more serene experience in Zion’s winter wonderland.
