Every summer, the amateur radio group I'm a part of packs up in June and heads out to an activity called “Field Day” where we set up equipment and make as many contacts as we can in a 24 hour period. For the few years I have been a member of our club, that activity takes place out at Three Peaks Recreational Area.

Three Peaks has been around longer than I have been in the area, and it dawned on me that I didn't know much about the history of Three Peaks. The area encompasses three prominent peaks – South Peak, Middle Peak, and North Peak – each with its own unique story.

Native American tribes, including the Southern Paiute, inhabited the region for centuries, drawn by its abundant wildlife, water sources, and strategic location. Evidence of their presence, such as petroglyphs and artifacts, can still be found throughout the area, serving as a testament to their enduring connection to the land.

During the mid-19th century, European settlers began to explore and establish settlements in the region. The area surrounding the Three Peaks was utilized for ranching and agriculture, with pioneers relying on its resources for survival. Trails were carved through the rugged terrain, facilitating travel and trade between communities.

In the early 20th century, the Three Peaks gained recognition for its recreational opportunities. Outdoor enthusiasts were drawn to the area's natural beauty, using it as a destination for camping, hiking, and horseback riding. As interest in outdoor recreation grew, efforts were made to preserve and protect the land for future generations.

In the 1960s, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) designated the Three Peaks area as a recreational site, recognizing its significance as a recreational resource. Trails were established, campgrounds were developed, and infrastructure was put in place to accommodate visitors while preserving the area's natural integrity.

Today, the Three Peaks Recreational Area continues to attract visitors from near and far, offering a wide range of recreational activities amidst stunning desert landscapes. Whether it's hiking to the summit of one of the peaks, exploring the network of trails on foot or bike, taking part in exciting off road and rock crawling adventures, remote control aircraft flying, disc golf, or simply enjoying a picnic amidst the tranquility of the desert, the area remains a beloved destination for outdoor adventure.
