Utah has earned a spot among the top five safest states in the nation, according to new research by WalletHub, which ranked the Beehive State fifth overall in its 2025 report on the Safest States in America. The study compared all 50 states across a broad range of factors that go far beyond traditional crime statistics, analyzing what it truly means to live in a safe environment.

Vermont, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine ranked just ahead of Utah, while Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, Florida, and Arkansas were found to be the least safe. Utah’s high placement reflects its balanced performance across five key dimensions: personal and residential safety, financial safety, road safety, workplace safety, and emergency preparedness. WalletHub’s methodology used 52 different metrics drawn from federal and state data sources, including the FBI, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Each dimension measured a unique aspect of daily life. Personal and residential safety evaluated violent and property crime rates, assaults, and mass shootings. Financial safety factored in unemployment, poverty, and the prevalence of identity theft. Road safety examined traffic fatalities, pedestrian accidents, and impaired driving. Workplace safety measured injuries and fatalities on the job, while emergency preparedness assessed how well states respond to and recover from natural disasters.

Utah’s inclusion among the safest states suggests it performs consistently well in each area, combining a strong economy and relatively low unemployment with low rates of violent crime and a proactive approach to emergency management. The study’s authors noted that safety encompasses far more than the absence of crime; it reflects a community’s overall stability and resilience in the face of challenges, whether economic or environmental.

What Are The Safest Cities In Utah?

Along with reporting the safest states in America, WalletHub also released a listing of the safest cities in the nation. Utah had two locations included on that list. In what may seem surprising to those of us who feel relatively safe here in the southern part of the state, WalletHub’s metrics in that research point to West Valley City and Salt Lake City as the safest places in Utah.

For residents and newcomers alike, WalletHub’s analysis offers reassurance that the state remains a secure and well-prepared place to call home, with a quality of life grounded in both safety and opportunity.
