Bats in Utah are an essential part of the ecosystem and despite the bad rap they have, they are protected by law.

That’s right, bats in Utah are a protected species and there are even bat enthusiasts (like me) who have set up rehabilitation centers for the creatures. There are only two of these centers in the state. One is in a cave in Logan, and another is the Birds of Prey Center Utah facility.

Utah’s bat season is year-round but with more sightings in the warmer months like summer and fall.

So, it's a bit early to be seeing them but bats should be making more appearances soon in Utah. One thing these little guys help with is pest control which is essential to maintaining the Utah ecosystem.

Though movies and media have made them out to be scary and “blood thirsty” bats are just derpy night fliers.

However, they can pose a problem in the home if they happen to get in. Less than one percent of bats in Utah has rabies. However, if they get handled by bare human hands they will have to be put down, Wasatch Wildlife Conservation Center said.

Since these little guys are nocturnal, they sometimes like to sleep on the ground and can be found by trees. If you see this, make sure pets and kids stay away and call the Birds of Prey Center Utah as soon as possible.

Depending on the bats condition, it may need to be taken in if it's been orphaned or injured.
