If you’re new to Utah, you might think you’re blending in just fine—until you open your mouth and ask for directions. Locals can spot an out-of-towner instantly by the way they pronounce a few key place names. Don’t worry, it’s all in good fun, and if you have a hot accent we may just let it slide. If you want to avoid the polite chuckle and side-eye correction, here’s your crash course.

The cheat sheet for sounding like a true Utahn

1. Hurricane
Visitors: Hurri-cane, like the storm.
Locals: Hurri-kun, like your cousin who “done did it again.” No storm clouds, just a name we’ve flattened into something uniquely ours.

2. Toquerville
Visitors: Toh-kwir-ville.
Locals: Toe-kur-ville. Say it straight, nice and easy—this little gateway town to Zion deserves the respect.

3. Nephi
Visitors: Nephee, rhyming with “selfie.”
Locals: Nee-fy, long “i” at the end. Outsiders butcher it so often that locals can tell instantly who’s “not from around here.”

4. Tooele
Visitors: Too-ell-ee or Tool-ee.
Locals: Too-ill-uh. This one has broken many GPS voice assistants and confused every tourist at least once. Even Utahns will admit it looks nothing like it sounds.

5. Ivins
Visitors: Eye-vins, heavy emphasis on the “eye,” or even worse, eh-vins
Locals: I-vinz. Quick and casual, like you’re just trying to get to Tuacahn on time.

6. Zion
Visitors: Zye-on, two clear syllables.
Locals: Zye-un, almost like one word. If you draw it out, you’ve just told everyone at the trailhead you’re not from here.

Wrap-Up

At the end of the day, mispronouncing these places is almost a Utah rite of passage. Locals don’t really mind—it gives us something to giggle about while waiting in line at the gas station or national park. But if you can nail all six without a stumble, congrats: you’re either from here, or you’ve officially earned honorary Utahn status.
