It feels like every week, another major retailer announces they're shutting down, and after decades of being staples in their communities, it’s tough to see them go. While inflation plays a part, the bigger culprit here is the shift to online shopping. In 2024, more people than ever are skipping trips to physical stores in favor of shopping from their couches. We’ve already seen closures from household names like Bed Bath & Beyond and Rue 21, and now, yet another massive retail chain is gearing up to close almost a third of its locations—300 stores, to be exact.

STORES CLOSING IN CALIFORNIA:

California is taking one of the hardest hits, with closures spanning the state:

  • Anaheim (1670 W Katella Ave. & 6336 E Santa Ana Canyon Rd.)
  • Atascadero: 2240 El Camino Real
  • Bakersfield (1211 Olive Dr. & 2621 Fashion Pl.)
  • Beaumont: 1482 E 2nd St.
  • Camarillo: 353 Carmen Dr.
(and dozens more across the state)

STORES CLOSING IN NEVADA:

  • North Las Vegas: 1601 W Craig Rd.

WHY IS BIG LOTS SHUTTING DOWN THESE STORES?

The closures are part of a restructuring plan aimed at staying competitive in today’s challenging retail landscape. Founded in 1967, Big Lots originally started as a closeout retailer focused on auto parts before expanding into home goods, furniture, and seasonal items. Known for offering deep discounts—20–40% below discount retailers and up to 70% less than traditional stores—the chain became a go-to for budget-savvy shoppers.

However, like many brick-and-mortar stores, Big Lots has struggled to keep up with online competitors. Combined with inflation and rising operating costs, these challenges have forced the company to close underperforming locations.

THE FUTURE OF BIG LOTS

While it’s sad to see so many locations shutting down, this move is intended to stabilize the company and help it thrive in the long term. For now, shoppers in California, Utah, and Nevada might want to check if their local Big Lots store is among those closing. Time to stock up on deals while you still can!
