OFFICIAL: The Olympics Are Coming Back To Utah!
What a day to be a Utahn! On Pioneer Day, Utah's Birthday, it's now official! The celebrations have begun: The 2034 Winter Olympic Games will be coming back to Salt Lake City! This will be 32 years since the city hosted their first Winter Games in 2002. The 2002 Olympics are far and wide considered the most successful Olympics to date. They had the LARGEST crowds ever for the Winter Games, and that record still stands today. Choosing Salt Lake City for the 2034 Games was a no-brainer. All 13 venues from 2002 are STILL in use today for training or competition! The French Alps were announced as the city for the 2030 Olympics.
WHY 2034 INSTEAD OF 2030?
Many have wondered why did the US Olympic Committee not go after 2030, instead of 2034? The reason seems to be because The United States are already hosting the Summer Games in Los Angeles in 2028, and they feared 2028 and 2030 were too close to do both correctly.
When the Olympics landed in Salt Lake City in 2002, the United States were on the heels of the worst tragedy in American history; The September 11th Terror Attacks. Fear was rampant in Salt Lake City with the threat of another attack. Security was everywhere, but the games went on without a hitch.
Now, 22 years later, neither the Summer or Winter Olympics have returned to the United States, but that will soon change when the world floods into the states in Los Angeles in 2028 and Salt Lake City in 2034.
PARTY IN SALT LAKE CITY!
A huge group of people were having a "Sleepover" in downtown Salt Lake City on the early morning of July 24th waiting on the big news at Washington Square in front of the Salt Lake City and County Building downtown at 2:30 am. The announcement should be made at 3:00 am which is 11:00 am in Paris. The Paris games will kick-off Friday, July 26th and go until Sunday, August 11th.
THE MOST COMPACT GAMES EVER:
Salt Lake City's 2034 Olympics will be the most compact Olympics in the entire history. Every event will be within one hour of the single Athlete Village in downtown Salt Lake City.
