Remind Me To NEVER Fly Spirit Airlines AGAIN!
My three year old son, Tru, lives in Nashville, Tennessee. Once a month, I'll fly out to Nashville to spend some time with him. Of course, St. George doesn't have a flight to Nashville, so I go out of Provo or Las Vegas (mostly Vegas). The flights into Nashville aren't cheap, but luckily, they're not crazy expensive either... But here's the catch: To fly cheap, you'll need to fly the dreaded SPIRIT AIRLINES! A lot of people fly Spirit for their cheap tickets, but I think most people usually regret it in the end. This time... I've finally had enough!
If I ever try to fly Spirit Airlines again... You have permission to slap me.
My flight was set to leave Thursday night (really Friday morning) right after midnight at 12:15am. When I arrived at the hotel around 10:30pm Thursday night, everything seemed to be normal. Stand way too close to strangers, get everything out of your pockets, while being yelled at by a TSA Agent being paid for by your tax dollars, before running to your gate that's conveniently located 6 miles away from Security. This time, when I finally got to my gate it was a little different. It was PACKED! Thousands of people are piled into the terminal and NOBODY is going anywhere! Finally we caught word that there was some Microsoft problem and planes all over the world are not able to fly. But Spirit STILL never told us that our plane wouldn't be flying. They changed our departure gate without posting on the computer screens, updating the app, texting or emailing us. I sprint to the new gate, and after an hour of waiting, they finally tell us our flight to Nashville has been cancelled.
We were told that we'd be rebooked on a new Spirit flight that could be in the next few hours, so, like everyone else, I found a spot to sleep... inside the disgusting Las Vegas airport. Hundreds of people were sleeping on the floor, in chairs, or like me, underneath a slot machine. I felt like this wasn't far from where my life could've been if a few decisions in my life were made differently. The time passed, and it's now 10:00 am, and still no word from Spirit. Every other airline was back up and running. Flights were going on like normal, but NOT SPIRIT! Spirit was still at a standstill. But I needed to get to Nashville, I was not going to miss this time with my son. I booked a $700 ticket with Southwest to ensure that I would make it to Nashville only a day late.
WHERE'S MY CAR?!
I made it into Nashville, but of course, getting there at 3:00am, almost 24 hours late, Hertz Car Rental was closed. They had signs saying they were in the garage and to come find them. LIARS! I searched for 45 minutes before booking a NEW reservation with AVIS. That only cost me $500. I'm now $1200 in, and that doesn't count my original Spirit ticket, nor my original Hertz car rental.
LEAVING NASHVILLE:
After spending a very short, but very memorable weekend with my son in Nashville, I'm writing this to you from the Nashville International Airport. My Spirit flight was set to leave at 4:05 pm, but got a notification that the flight was delayed 15 minutes. That's not too bad. Just 15 minutes. Time keeps passing and they make an announcement that our plane that we should be leaving on right now, has NOT left Newark, New Jersey yet. GREAT! People are angry and lined up trying to talk to Spirit in hopes they don't miss their connecting flights in Las Vegas. As of now, our flight should be leaving at 8:30 pm... only 4 and a half hours late!
