A Heart-Stopping Incident: The Deaton Family Fire

A terrifying moment happened in central Utah: a house fire with children inside. A father's split second decision has likely saved his children's lives. Now, more than a week later, a Southern Utah community (and beyond) are rallying around a young family as one of their little boys continues to fight to recover.

Two year old Dax Deaton remains hospitalized on a ventilator after a fire ripped through his family's Richfield home on the morning of February 18th. Richfield, located about 170 miles north of St. George, became the scene of a parent's worst nightmare when flames and smoke quickly filled the home while Dax and his twin brother, Nix were trapped in the basement.

A Father's Bravery: Navigating Through Darkness

Their father, Kade Deaton, said the fire spread fast and it felt as if it came out of nowhere. When he rushed downstairs, the visibility was nearly zero because of such heavy smoke. Feeling his sons tug as him in the darkness, Kade was able to grab both boys as he fought his way back upstairs. At one point, he briefly lost hold of one of the children in the smoke, only able to find him again after hearing a small whimper.

Both of the Deaton boys suffered smoke inhalation, but Nix has recovered after several days in the hospital. Unfortunately, Dax's injuries are far more severe. Doctors are saying the burns in his throat and lungs have required heavy sedation and breathing support. Dax continues his treatment at Primary Children's Hospital.

Rallying Together: Community Support for the Deaton Family

Despite losing nearly everything in the fire, the Deaton's remain hopeful. Kade says that rescuing both of his sons feels nothing short of a miracle, and their faith has helped carry through this tough time. Friends and community members have stepped in to provide support for the family as they begin rebuilding their lives.
