The Unofficial Southern Utah Status Symbol? Coolers
If you know, you know.
There are places where people own one cooler. Maybe two if they’re feeling outdoorsy.
And then there’s Southern Utah.
Somewhere between the desert heat, lake days, and “we might be out there awhile” culture, every household quietly accumulates an unreasonable number of coolers. Not one. Not three. A stack. A tower. A garage wall dedicated solely to insulated plastic.
Here’s why.
First, the obvious: it’s hot. Like “why is my steering wheel a branding iron” hot. When you’re floating at Sand Hollow State Park or spending the day at Quail Creek State Park, one cooler for drinks is simply not enough. You need one for water, one for soda, one for the “good snacks,” and possibly a backup in case someone forgets ice.
Then there’s camping. Whether you’re headed toward Zion National Park or just up Cedar Mountain, a single cooler feels irresponsible. What if the meat touches the fruit? What if someone opens the drink cooler too often and ruins the temperature integrity of the sandwich cooler? We are a cautious people.
Don’t forget sports season. Between baseball tournaments, football games, and track meets, there is always a parent hauling orange slices, water bottles, and something from Swig. That requires at least one team cooler and one “family survival” cooler.
And of course, we’ve all been influenced by the rise of the rugged, bear-proof, “survives-the-apocalypse” cooler. You know the brand. It costs more than your first car and promises to keep ice solid until next Thursday. Once one person in the neighborhood buys one, the rest of us start questioning our insulation standards.
But here’s the real reason: Southern Utah people are planners. We prepare for lake days, road trips, power outages, desert hikes, and spontaneous gatherings. A cooler means you’re ready. Ready for heat. Ready for friends. Ready for “hey, we’re heading out in 10.”
So yes, we own too many coolers.
But when July hits 108 degrees and someone says, “Does anyone have an extra?” we will proudly open the garage and say, “How many do you need?”
