Southern Utah Sports: More Than Just Friday Night Football
If you think Southern Utah sports begin and end with Friday night football, you might want to check the schedule again. From high school fields to college stadiums and tournament complexes, sports are a pretty big part of life across the region.
High School Sports Bring the Community Together
Fall means football, and Southern Utah has plenty of it. High school teams from St. George, Cedar City, Hurricane, Washington, Snow Canyon and surrounding communities bring out students, parents, grandparents and plenty of fans who somehow know exactly what the referee did wrong.
Football isn't the only show in town, either. Volleyball, soccer, cross country, tennis, golf, swimming, wrestling, baseball and softball keep local athletes busy throughout the school year. High school sports also give smaller communities a chance to rally around their schools and their athletes.
Cedar City and Southern Utah University have even hosted UHSAA state semifinal football games, bringing teams and fans from across Utah into Southern Utah.
College Sports Are Getting Interesting
Southern Utah University and Utah Tech University give the region two Division I athletic programs to follow.
The 2026 season marks an especially interesting change. Both schools officially joined the Big Sky Conference in July 2026, giving Utah three Big Sky members when combined with Weber State.
For football fans, that means the rivalry between SUU and Utah Tech gets another chapter. The two teams are scheduled to meet October 3 at Greater Zion Stadium in St. George for the Battle for the Ax.
SUU's 2026 football schedule also includes home games against Weber State and Idaho State, along with road games against Montana, Colorado State and others.
Utah Tech brings its own college-sports lineup to St. George, with football, basketball, baseball, softball, soccer and other programs keeping the campus busy throughout the year. Greater Zion Stadium serves as a home for Trailblazers football and soccer, while Burns Arena hosts basketball and volleyball.
Softball Is Serious Business Here
Southern Utah's warm climate makes the area a natural destination for softball tournaments. The Canyons Softball Complex in St. George includes multiple fields and is designed to accommodate tournament play, while facilities throughout the area host youth, high school, adult and senior competitions.
That means a random weekend trip to the park can turn into a full-blown tournament scene pretty quickly.
Then There Is Everything Outside the Stadium
Southern Utah's sports culture goes well beyond organized team sports. Golf is huge here, with courses stretching from St. George and Washington to Hurricane and beyond. Red-rock scenery is practically part of the equipment.
You can find everything from municipal courses such as Dixie Red Hills Golf Course to destination-style courses such as Black Desert Golf Course and Sand Hollow Resort.
Then there is hiking, mountain biking, pickleball, swimming, running, fishing and the very Southern Utah tradition of rodeo. The Dixie Sunbowl remains closely associated with the Dixie Roundup Rodeo and other major outdoor events.
Whether you prefer bleachers, a golf cart, a trailhead or a rodeo arena, Southern Utah makes it pretty easy to find a sport that fits.
And if you are the person who claims you "don't really follow sports," that's fine. Just don't say it too loudly during football season.
