Simple Steps Every Southern Utahn Can Take to Prevent Wildfires
Southern Utah has had its share of wildfires, but this year is different. After another dry winter and below-average snowpack, the landscape is primed for fire. Just this past weekend, the Forsyth Fire in the Pine Valley Mountains forced evacuations and burned thousands of acres.

It’s a scary reminder that, with the massive drought in our region, our forests, deserts, and even neighborhoods are more vulnerable than ever. Dry brush, brittle trees, and strong winds can turn a spark into a raging wildfire in minutes.

What You Can Do Right Now to Lower Wildfire Risk
The good news? There are steps we can all take to help reduce wildfire risks, even in severe drought conditions. First, creating defensible space around your home is one of the most effective tools. That means clearing away dead plants, dry weeds, leaves, and any flammable debris within at least 30 feet of your house. Click here for A FULL Checklist from Utah Fire Info If you can, replace wood chips or bark mulch near your home with gravel or other non-combustible materials. Also, trimming tree branches at least 10 feet away from roofs and chimneys can help prevent flying embers from catching.

On a community level, supporting fuel reduction projects, like controlled burns and mechanical thinning, makes a big difference. Agencies like Utah Forestry, Fire & State Lands work with communities to manage overgrown vegetation and reduce wildfire intensity. Finally, stay fire-aware: follow fire restrictions, report illegal campfires, and keep spark-producing tools away from dry grass. Drought is definitely beyond our control, but preparation and prevention can definitely help us stay safer when fire season hits in Southern Utah.
