Major Airline Is Leaving Utah Forever: Residents Upset!
Utah travelers looking for a flight are now about to lose one of their cheapest options! Spirit Airlines announced this week that they will CEASE operations out of Salt Lake City International Airport. They're officially cutting ties with Utah, as part of a major bankruptcy restructuring. They're cutting the cord on October 2nd.
Spirit Airlines is known as a low-cost airline that first launched service into Salt Lake City in early 2022. Spirits arrival made a big splash as SLC's first new carrier in eight years. Utah families were viewing this as a game-changer, offering cheap fares into Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Orlando. However, the excitement failed to take off. With other airlines already covering these routes, Spirit was never able to really get off off the ground.
Spirit Airlines is now working through its SECOND bankruptcy filing in less than a year. They're trimming what they're considering "weaker" markets like Boise, Oakland, Sacramento, and Portland.
For travelers, this isn't exactly a devastating loss. Every route that Spirit offers is still offered by their competitors. But, if you were one that loved Spirit's low fares, this one stings! Spirit was once seen as a brand new option for budget conscious travelers, but with $2.5 billion in losses since Covid, it's pretty clear that the airline couldn't find a home in Utah.
If you have Spirit flights booked between now and October 2nd, your flights are expected to depart as usual, but it's always smart to continue to check your reservations. Spirit will be missed!
