STRIKE: 8 Items We Will See Shortages Of In Utah, California and Nevada
Members of the International Longshoreman’s Association have officially launched a nationwide strike, affecting more than 50,000 dockworkers at ports across the East Coast and Gulf Coast, including major hubs that supply Utah, California, and Nevada. These workers were fighting for better wages—seeking a $5 per hour increase—and voicing concerns over the rising use of automation, which they believe could put their jobs at risk.
A deal has now been reached, that will run until January of 2025, but that doesn't mean we're out of the woods yet! We could still be experiencing major shortages of multiple items!
So, what could we be running low on? Experts have pointed out several items likely to be impacted, including furniture, canned foods, imported chocolate, and even beer. Here are eight things you might want to grab before they’re gone:
Auto Parts – If you’re eyeing a new car, you might want to act fast—European cars and parts often pass through the impacted ports.
Bananas – Over 75% of America’s bananas come in through ILA-handled ports, making this tropical favorite a top concern for shortages.
Beer – A staggering 80% of imported beer, wine, whiskey, and scotch enter through the impacted ports.
Canned Foods – About 85% of canned foods enter the U.S. through these ports, so stock up.
Coffee – The morning caffeine fix might become pricier, as 81% of imported coffee comes through East Coast ports.
Furniture – With the holiday season around the corner, furniture shortages could become a problem for shoppers.
Imported Chocolate – As much as 80% of chocolate comes in through the affected ports.
Seafood – Restaurants and grocers are already feeling the pinch, with seafood supplies dwindling.
Retailers have been trying to get ahead of the issue by stockpiling goods, but if these boats don't make it to the port soon, we could see both price hikes and significant shortages well into next month!
