I knew it. Absolutely no surprise in an article that hit my newsfeed the other day. In Utah, we're number 1 when it comes to bad drivers. Just driving around on the streets in town, let alone on I-15 or even more unimaginable, driving up along the Wasatch Front, you had to know we had the worse drivers in the nation. It seems like every time I get behind the wheel I feel like this

So when to report came out from Quote Wizard the other day, I had confidence that I did indeed live among the worst drivers ever. According to the report,

Utah drivers took over the top spot by ranking high in every dangerous driving category. Utah ranks first in speeding, second in citations, fifth in accidents and eighth in DUIs.

So there you have it. Case closed. We're the worst.

Or, are we? I have a vested interest in keeping Utah out of the top spot for worst drivers, and you do, too. If we are really the lousiest drivers in the nation what do you think will happen to the rates that you and I pay (or should be paying, but that's another article for another time) for insurance for our vehicles? Spoiler alert: they won't be decreasing. In fact the Quote Wizard reports says we should be bracing for increases.

But, we may not be Number 1. In a quote that I had attributed to Mark Twain, but he said was spoken by former British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, there are

lies, damned lies, and statistics.

So, using that as my motivation I Googled “worst driving states.” Sure enough, the Quote Wizard report was right there.

But Wait There's More

However, right up there was a report from Motorbiscuit.com ranking the worst drivers in the nation. Top of the list on that report? Mississippi. And then there was this report from Insurify.com that had an even different champion. The winner here? Ohio. And in a report from Smartasset.com it's Mississippi on top of the list again. And in that report Utah looked pretty tame. All these reports are for 2022, but some were released earlier in the year, so we have had a few months to make our case of being the worst in the USA.

So, for now at least, I may not need to sweat out an increase in my insurance rates, and hopefully you won't need to worry about that either. But, this should give us pause to thought. There's more travel coming for the holidays, and winter driving conditions ought to give us the motivation to just slow it down a bit. In that Quote Wizard report we were number 1 for speeding. And No DUI, please

So thanks to Mark Twain or Benjamin Disraeli and Google, we may or may not be the state with the worst drivers in the nation. But Utah, in my heart, you'll always be a contender.
