"Spanning 20 miles in length, 11 miles in width, and plunging 3,000 feet deep, the Long Valley Caldera in California has been a source of concern for researchers for years. Its immense size classifies it as one of the world’s 20 known super volcanoes, earning a VEI 8 rating on the volcanic eruption scale."

Volcanologists are increasingly worried that this super volcano could erupt in the near future, as it’s long overdue—it hasn’t erupted in over 750,000 years!

WHY ARE PEOPLE FREAKED OUT?

The sheer magnitude of this super volcano is staggering. If it were to erupt, the impact would be so catastrophic that no crisis management efforts could fully mitigate the disaster. We wouldn’t just be facing the loss of thousands of lives—millions could be at risk. If the volcano shows signs of erupting, anyone within at least a 1,000-mile radius could be in danger, not only from the lava but also from the ash and debris that would fill the atmosphere.
