Shopping at Walmart? Know These Emergency Codes
When I’m shopping at Walmart, I’m just trying to get in and out. I’m the make-a-list-and-stick-to-it type, I usually don't have time for wandering the aisles. But every once in a while, I hear something over the intercom that makes me pause: one of those color-coded alerts.
Walmart uses these codes to quietly let staff know what’s going on without panicking customers. And yes, Code Brown sounds funny—but trust me, it’s not.
When “Code Brown” Means Trouble, Not a Toilet
Code Brown means someone’s being aggressive, possibly violent. Think fights, threats, or shoplifting gone wild. If you hear it, do yourself a favor and head for the exit. You don’t want to be nearby if things escalate.
Here are a few other codes that might pop up while you’re reaching for peanut butter:
Code Blue: Medical emergency. Staff will respond quickly and call for help.
Code Red: Fire. Stay calm and follow any directions to evacuate if necessary.
Code Orange: Chemical spill. Staff will keep people away while handling cleanup.
Code Black: Severe weather like a tornado. You’ll be directed to a safe place inside the store.
Code White: Time to evacuate. Could be a fire alarm, gas leak, or, like what just happened at the Cedar City Walmart, a full power outage with no way to check people out.
Code Green: This one’s rare and terrifying. Active shooter or hostage situation. Leave immediately and call 911 if you’re safe.
Code Adam: A child is missing in the store. Staff will start searching and monitoring exits right away.
These codes aren’t meant to scare anyone—they help staff handle situations quickly and quietly. But knowing what they mean can help you make smart decisions in the moment. Here's my advice: Stay calm, don’t be too nosy, and if you sense something serious is happening, just go. Get out. Safety first, groceries second.
