Winter Activities That Aren’t Skiing (Because… St. George
If you live in Southern Utah, you already know winter looks a little different here. While the rest of the state is buried in powder, we get the kind of crisp, sunny days that make you wonder if you should wear a jacket or just trust your stubbornness. And since skiing is not exactly our hometown specialty, here are winter activities that actually fit the St. George lifestyle.
Take a Winter Hike Without Freezing
One of the best parts of winter here is that the trails finally chill out. Literally and figuratively. Spots like Snow Canyon, Red Cliffs, or the Padre Canyon Trail offer cool weather, fewer crowds, and just enough sunshine to feel like you are cheating at winter. It is the perfect time to bring out the camera and pretend you are a nature influencer for a few hours.

Explore Downtown St. George
Winter is the season when downtown feels cozy instead of hot. Grab a warm treat, wander through the local shops, admire the art murals, or check out the St. George Children’s Museum if you have kids in tow. The town has a slower pace this time of year and it is a great chance to enjoy it without fighting the summer heat.

Visit the Local Hot Springs
Baker Hot Springs is a road trip favorite. It is not fancy but it is warm, relaxing, and just far enough away to feel like an adventure. If you prefer something closer, Mystic Hot Springs in Monroe makes for a one of a kind winter soak that feels equal parts quirky and peaceful.

Take a Scenic Drive
Winter light hits the red rocks in a way that deserves its own calendar. You can take a slow drive through Snow Canyon, Kolob Canyons, or even out toward Gunlock Reservoir. Fewer visitors means you can actually enjoy the views without bumper to bumper tourist traffic.

Try Winter Camping
Yes, it is colder. Yes, you will question your life choices around midnight. But winter camping in Southern Utah is a whole different vibe. The skies are clearer, the crowds are thinner, and the quiet is unreal. Places like Sand Hollow or Quail Creek offer easy spots for a quick overnight that does not require a snow shovel or chains.

Check Out Local Events
From holiday markets to winter concerts to community light displays, St. George actually has a full winter calendar. Events shift each year but you can count on something happening every weekend. It is a great excuse to get out of the house and feel seasonal without needing skis.
Have a Cozy Food Tour
Winter is comfort food season and Southern Utah has plenty of spots worth exploring. Grab soup from a local café, try a new bakery, or make a night out of visiting your favorite cozy restaurants. It is warm, it is delicious, and it requires zero winter gear.
Enjoy Zion in the Off Season
If you want to experience Zion without peak season crowds, winter is your chance. Trails are cooler, parking is easier, and the views are still stunning. Just check the weather and trail conditions first since higher elevations can still get icy.
Amazing Angels Landing Hike in Zion National Park
Angels Landing was the coolest and most thrilling hike I have ever experienced in my life. While there are plenty of other great hiking trails in Zion, this is the granddaddy of them all. Whether you are able to reach the very top or not, Angels Landing is a hike that needs to go on the very top of your hiking bucket list.
