
Breakthrough In Archeology: Will AI Reveal More of Utah’s Past?
Archeologists have discovered hundreds of new figures drawn in the Nazca Desert in Peru from former inhabitants. Using artificial intelligence to analyze photographs taken with drones they have doubled the number figures in what is known as the Nazca Lines.
How AI Discovered 303 New Nazca Lines
The computer was able to recognize patterns and abnormalities from the data fed into it. What archeologists have struggled for years to recognized, AI was able to accomplish in minutes and provided new understanding.
With so much new data to analyze, archeologists have gained greater insight into the purpose of the lines and how they were used. This leap forward was accomplished using the latest technology and new ways to gather information.
What Could AI Tell Us About Utah’s History
In Utah, the Freemont and Anasazi people left numerous ruins and rock art before they disappeared from the archeological record. The state has many gorges with overhanging cliffs that hide ancient structures and small villages just waiting to be discovered.
If the same techniques using drones and AI were used in Utah like they have been in the Nazca Desert, could we also gain huge insights into these previous residents. Who knows what might be discovered in Utah’s sprawling terrain.
