Dragon's Dogma 2, a new video game has been released and it is being criticized for its many microtransactions. These are not new, but I thought looking at them could help us better understand one of Utah's big tax income streams.

As you might know a microtransaction in a game allows you to make a purchase with real money to get a virtual game item. This concept has been around for a long time and you probably have bumped into the idea on one of your games.

I remember talking to one of our political leaders about sales tax, many states had done away with it at that time, but this individual was defending the idea. That was before I was independently wealthy, so I was extremely interested in saving any money I could on our stretched budget. I was all for ditching the sales tax and it hurt my dog-eared wallet to hear them defend it.

Then they gave an explanation that resonated with my soul. They explained that a sales tax is the fairest tax available to the free market. Those who don't make a purchase don't pay it, those who are more liquid in their income do.

I'm not sure I am a fan of microtransactions in a game, but it does open the door for frugal players to get in while allowing the game makers to make money on those willing to buy upgrades. Sort of like a sales tax.

I hope this helps you appreciate a sales tax, a microtransaction and my independently wealthy status that is much more virtual than physical.
