Cedar City Police officers responded shortly after noon today to the 100 West block of Harding Avenue after receiving a report of an adult male who was suicidal and holding a firearm to his head.

Upon arrival, officers established a perimeter around the area and safely evacuated occupants from the building where the man was located. Nearby buildings were also evacuated as a precaution to protect residents and others in the surrounding area.

Iron Metro SWAT And Crisis Negotiators Respond

The Iron Metro SWAT team and crisis negotiators responded to assist. Officers and negotiators maintained communication with the man for an extended period, working to de-escalate the situation and encourage him to surrender peacefully.

Their efforts were ultimately successful. After speaking with negotiators, the man surrendered without further incident. He was transported to a local hospital to receive mental health care and assistance.

The Cedar City Police Department said incidents involving individuals experiencing a mental health crisis can be extremely difficult and dangerous for everyone involved. The department's priority is to protect the individual, the public and responding officers while connecting those in crisis with appropriate resources and care.

Cedar City Police also thanked the Iron County Sheriff's Office, Southern Utah University Police Department, Utah Highway Patrol, Enoch City Police Department and Gold Cross Ambulance for assisting with the response. Their cooperation helped bring the situation to a safe and peaceful conclusion.
