Neurodivergence on the Rise: What’s Happening in Southern Utah?
According to University of Utah Health, autism prevalence among 8-year-olds in Utah is currently 1 in 37 (2.7%), which is slightly below the national average of 1 in 31. Still, that number represents a significant portion of Utah families—and an increase compared to past decades. These numbers also show how far awareness and testing have come in just one generation.
A CDC report from a three-county region in Northern Utah found that about 1 in 40 children were identified with Autism Spectrum Disorder. This matches national trends and reflects better diagnostic tools and broader public understanding of neurodiversity.

So what’s behind the rise? ADDitude Magazine and Psychology Today both cite expanded criteria,( A broader definition base.) improved tools, and reduced stigma as key factors in this upward trend. Many families are receiving answers they didn’t have before.

Locally, providers like Harper Clinic Utah and The Neurodiversity Clinic offer testing and support services tailored to neurodivergent individuals and their families.
For many in Washington and Iron Counties, a diagnosis doesn’t mean something is “wrong”—it means there’s finally an explanation. Now, with earlier identification, kids can access support sooner, leading to better outcomes at home, in school, and most importantly, in relationships.
As awareness grows, so does the call for understanding, inclusion, and meaningful resources for neurodivergent residents across Southern Utah.
