Fall in Utah is one of the most underrated times to travel. Between the cool mountain air, the fiery red leaves in the canyons, and the slower crowds at popular parks, you can experience  the best of Utah in a new way.

1. Time it Right.
Peak fall colors in Utah vary by elevation. The time is now!  In the mountains, colors usually show off in late September through early October, while lower elevation areas like Zion or Capitol Reef turn later in October. Planning around elevation is key if you want those picture-perfect views.
2. Dress in Layers.
Utah weather can shift quickly this time of year. Typically you use the heater in the morning, switch to ac in the heat of the day and you need that heat again in the evening when the sun has gone down. Pack lightweight layers so you’re ready for anything. In fact keep a couple of jackets in your car, so you are always prepared.
3. Explore Beyond the Parks.
While Zion and Arches are stunning, don’t forget about lesser-known gems like Cedar Breaks National Monument, Logan Canyon, or literally ANYTHING near Fish Lake. These areas offer incredible fall colors with half the crowds.
4. Take the Scenic Route.
Utah’s highways and byways are destinations on their own. Try the Alpine Loop near Provo, Highway 12 between Torrey and Bryce Canyon, or the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway in the Uintas. Pack some snacks for a road trip, the drives alone are worth the trip.
Fall in Utah is short but spectacular. With smart planning and a little flexibility, you’ll see why locals call it the best-kept travel season of the year.
