What is REAL ID?

REAL ID is a form of identification that meets increased federal security standards for all state issued driver's licenses and ID cards in the United States. This has been proposed, passed and in the works since the 9/11 attacks, and just went into effect.  Our government is prompt, streamlined and so efficient.
The pitch from the government is that REAL ID enhances security and prevents identity fraud.

Who Needs REAL ID?

You need to have REAL ID to-
-Board any US flight
-Enter federal buildings
-Enter military bases
REAL ID typically has a gold star in the top right corner. Utah has been issuing REAL ID-compliant licenses since 2019. If your current license or ID has a gold star in the upper right corner, you're already compliant and no further action is needed.

How Do You Get Real ID?

In Utah you can get your REAL ID in person at the DMV. You will need all of the necessary documentation.
Here is the list of what you will need:

  1. Proof of Identity and Legal Presence: Such as a U.S. birth certificate or valid U.S. passport.
  1. Proof of Social Security Number: Like your Social Security card or a W-2 form.
  1. Two Proofs of Utah Residency: Examples include utility bills, bank statements, or a lease agreement.
  1. Proof of Name Change: If applicable, provide documents like a marriage certificate or court order.
