Utah’s MOST COMMON Scam Calls Are From THIS Area Code!
It happens to me multiple times a day and it's SO FRUSTRATING! Those stupid scam/spam calls! I NEVER answer calls I don't know anymore, but always get nervous when new numbers are calling me. Sometimes my phone will say "Spam Likely" when a lot of these numbers call, but more often than not... It's just an out of state phone number!
Here are the TOP 9 Area Codes that Scammers Will Use To Call You:
- 202 - Washington, D.C.
- 214 - Dallas, Texas
- 310 - Beverly Hills, California
- 407 - Orlando, Florida
- 702 - Las Vegas, Nevada
- 917 - New York, New York
- 786 - Miami, Florida
- 312 - Chicago, Illinois
- 832 - Houston, Texas
Remember, Scammers can use ANY area code they want to call you though. It doesn't have to be on this list. So it's always a good idea to be cautious when picking up the phone from numbers that you don't recognize.
Is it okay to answer the calls then hang up?
If you're SO CURIOUS, you can pick up the phone to find out who it is, but once you pick up the phone, apparently your number is then marked down as a LIVE NUMBER. A live number means a real person has that phone number and they can sell your number off to the next telemarketing company as a lead.
Can I ignore the call?
If the phone is ringing and you don't recognize the number, declining the call or "ignoring it" will send it directly to voicemail. This again, can give the scammers a positive hit that you are a live number. Have you ever noticed when you call someone and they ignore your call, the voicemail says "This person has forwarded you to voicemail." If the scammers gets notified that you forwarded the call to voicemail, they can see that again... this is a LIVE NUMBER. A real person owns this number. So, don't ignore it. Just let it go to voicemail on its own.
Can I block the number?
This is exactly what I do. If I don't recognize the number, or have received a voicemail proving that it's a scam caller, the next thing I do is block the phone number. There have been times where the SAME number will call me multiple times, and they're indeed scams. BLOCK THEM!
