Two Fatal Motorcycle and Bus Crashes Put Southern Utah Roads in the Spotlight
Southern Utah’s highways are popular with motorcyclists, tourists and local commuters, but two deadly crashes in 2026 serve as heartbreaking reminders of how quickly a routine drive can turn tragic.
From Cedar City to Kane County, recent collisions involving motorcycles and buses have drawn attention to the risks drivers face on the region’s busy roads. Both incidents resulted in the deaths of motorcycle riders, leaving families and communities grieving.

A closer look at two fatal motorcycle crashes involving buses in Southern Utah and the road safety lessons they leave behind.

Fatal Motorcycle and School Bus Crash in Cedar City
On October 5, 2026, a motorcyclist was killed in a collision with a school bus on State Route 56 near Lund Highway in Cedar City.
According to KSL News, Utah Highway Patrol reported that the motorcycle was traveling westbound and attempted to turn left on a yellow-arrow traffic signal in front of the eastbound bus. The bus struck the motorcycle, and the rider died at the scene.
The rider was wearing a helmet and protective gear, according to authorities.
Fortunately, the school bus was not carrying students at the time. The Iron County School District confirmed that the bus was beginning its morning route when the collision occurred and expressed condolences to the rider’s family.
The crash shut down eastbound and westbound lanes for approximately three hours while investigators worked at the scene.
The incident is a sobering reminder that even when riders wear protective equipment, serious collisions can still have fatal consequences. It also highlights the importance of carefully judging traffic signals, oncoming vehicles and the time needed to complete a turn.
Motorcycle and Tour Bus Collide in Kane County
Several months earlier, another fatal collision occurred in Southern Utah, this time involving a motorcycle and a tour bus traveling on U.S. Highway 89 in Kane County.
According to KSL’s May 26 report, the crash happened on May 25, 2026, near the Utah-Arizona border as a motorcycle and a tour bus headed north toward Kanab.
Utah Highway Patrol said the motorcyclist pulled onto the right shoulder and attempted a U-turn. The motorcycle failed to yield to the approaching tour bus, resulting in a collision.
The 45-year-old rider was ejected from the motorcycle and died from his injuries. The bus, which was carrying 29 people, skidded off the roadway. The bus driver was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, while two passengers reported minor bumps but did not require hospital treatment.
Many of the passengers were tourists from the United Kingdom who were traveling to Kanab for the night.
The crash illustrates the challenges of sharing long stretches of highway, where vehicles may approach from behind at significant speeds and drivers have limited time to react to unexpected turns.
Staying Safer on Southern Utah Roads
These two crashes involved different circumstances, but both highlight the importance of making careful decisions around other vehicles.
Motorcyclists can improve their visibility by using appropriate lighting, wearing reflective gear and avoiding sudden maneuvers when traffic is approaching. Before turning or making a U-turn, riders should ensure there is enough time and space to complete the maneuver safely.
Drivers of larger vehicles, including buses, also need to remain alert for motorcycles, which can be harder to see and may be obscured by blind spots.
For everyone traveling Southern Utah’s highways, patience, maintaining a safe following distance and anticipating other drivers’ movements can make a difference.
Southern Utah’s scenic roads are part of what makes the region special. Keeping them safe requires every driver and rider to make thoughtful decisions, especially when sharing the road with vehicles of very different sizes.
