One of America’s largest gas station chains is making waves with plans to shut down over 1,000 locations across the country between 2024 and 2025. That’s right—more than a thousand! But before you panic about finding your next fuel stop, know this: it’s all part of a big shift toward the future of transportation. So, who’s behind this massive move?

WHO’S TURNING OUT THE LIGHTS?

The oil and gas giant Shell is leading this transformation. Shell plans to close a significant chunk of its gas stations nationwide, with states like California, Utah, and Nevada expected to feel the impact. California alone is home to more than 1,100 Shell stations, while Nevada has over 1,000. Utah, though smaller in scale, still has 54 stations that could be affected.

Why the closures? Shell is doubling down on the electric vehicle (EV) market. The company aims to install 70,000 EV charging stations by 2025, ramping up to an ambitious 200,000 by 2030.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE REMAINING STATIONS?

For Shell stations that stick around, the future looks bright. These survivors will see major upgrades, including revamped retail spaces, expanded EV charging options, and more convenient features. If your neighborhood Shell is spared, expect it to look a whole lot sleeker soon.

WHICH LOCATIONS ARE ON THE CHOPPING BLOCK?

As of now, Shell hasn’t revealed exactly which stations will close, leaving customers in California, Utah, and Nevada to speculate. With its dense concentration of locations, California could see the highest number of closures, but Nevada and Utah aren’t off the hook.

Shell’s shift toward EV infrastructure isn’t new. In 2023, the company acquired Volta, a charging network that added **3,000 EV stations
