NEVER FORGET! The St. George Restaurants We REALLY MISS!
If you've been in St. George for a while, you probably have fond memories of a few restaurants that are no longer here. Maybe you cry yourself to sleep at night that you can't taste them again. That's perfectly normal!
Here are the Restaurants that the REAL OG's of St. George miss really bad!
SHONEY'S:
Shoney's was a little restaurant where Cafe Zupas is now! They had a Breakfast Buffet and it was AMAZING! This was... at least 20 years ago, and I still think about it today!
Burger Place:
The Burger Place in Washington was an absolute staple in Washington! It's been torn down and is now a car dealership? Or maybe it's a dirt lot? Either way I wish it never left us!
Iggy's:
Iggy's was an awesome sports bar. They were located in the same building Red Fort is now. FUN FACT: I worked at Iggy's in Salt Lake City for ONE WEEK, before I told them they could shove it, and never returned! Great French Fries though!
Famous Dave's BBQ:
Famous Dave's was a cool little BBQ place in the Lowes parking lot here in St. George! It's now the Verizon Store... Rumor has it, you can still smell BBQ sauce if you go buy the newest iPhone!
China Palace:
China Palace in St. George caught fire over a year ago, and people have been crushed about it! I've heard that they're going to be opening again, but in a new location! No clue as to where that location is going to be. I've heard multiple places, so I'll have to check in on that part!
Larsen's Frostop:
Frostop was my FAVORITE restaurant as a kid growing up in St. George! It was so good, and the vibes were awesome. However, things changed. New ownership came in a few times, small things changed, food prices got higher, and now Frostop is dead. GOOD NEWS: Sip-N is a new drink shop in the Frostop building and they've got fries and glaciers, just like Frostop used to. Plus, the inside of the building looks fantastic and very well done. Go check them out!
Fairway Grill:
Only the REAL ONES will remember Fairway Grill. It was located on St. George Boulevard. Currently, Banana Blossom Thai is in that building now! Do you remember Fairway Grill??
Even Stevens:
Even Stevens was a cool sandwich shop on the Boulevard! They stood where Cafe Rio was for years, and then Roctaco took over. Even Stevens had a really cool vibe, great food, and they even did live music a lot!
Magelby's:
Magelby's was SO GOOD! They had the best chocolate cake, and their rolls were AWESOME! I don't know what happened, but they allegedly got kicked out of the building, and they were supposed to find a new home, but one hasn't popped up yet! Hoping we hear more about Magelby's soon!
Jazzy Java:
Who remembers Jazzy's?! This place was a lot of fun! They had live music all the time, and their food was actually amazing! I went for lunch a few times and got their turkey sandwich, and it was SO GOOD! They got booted from the location, and I think they're actually back, but I'm not sure if things are the same or not!
Hash House A Go Go:
Hash House was delicious, and their portions were huge! However, this was one of those places that didn't survive covid, unfortunately. They tried to come back and had really strange hours and days of operation. But It's been tough for ANY restaurant to stay in business in this location.
Claim Jumper:
Claim Jumper was a steakhouse on Bluff Street that was here FOREVER! It's now been gone for about ten years, and Chef Alfredo's is now in that hallowed location! RIP Claim Jumper.
Basila's:
Who remembers Basilas on 700 South? This was a Mediterranean cafe that served Gyros, Pasta, Kabobs, Baklava, and Greek Salads. After Basila's left, Roy's Pizza took over the location, and now Zeppe's Italian Ice is there.
Village Inn:
Village Inn was one of my favorite breakfast places in town! I even had a birthday there before. They also had amazing pie, and on certain nights you could get pie for HELLA CHEAP! Village Inn is now a Quick Quack Carwash. I'm a Quick Quack member just so I can visit the old Village Inn as often as I want!
Burger Bar (Home Of The Big Ben):
This place had killer burgers and fries. They were located on Sunset Boulevard, diagonal from the Sand Hollow Aquatic Center. It's now Lamy's Mexican Food! This place once had Guy Fieri show up for Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. But... The Roy, Utah location. Not the St. George location.
Players:
This was one of my favorite restaurants! Players was a sports grill located next to the Cracker Barrel. They had TONS of tv screens up playing all the games, and they had AMAZING chicken tenders! I can't believe this place went under. But, what's even harder to believe is that NOBODY has taken this location over yet! BRING US CHEESECAKE FACTORY!
Smashburger:
I can't believe Smashburger went under! They had a great location, and even more great food! Maybe one of the best burgers we could get in town, and now they're gone! However, Super Chix is in their old spot right now, and they've got some incredible chicken tenders there, so I'll take it!
Pirate Island Pizza:
Pirate Island was located off Bluff Street and Sunset, right next to the Sunset Stadium 8 Megaplex. I don't even remember if their food was good or not, I just remember it was SO MUCH FUN! The waiters and waitresses dressed up like pirates, and the interior was ALL decked out. They even had an arcade, I believe. This place was so much fun for kids and families.
Godfather's Pizza:
Godfather's Pizza was a pizza place at the same location of Cafe Sabor. They had a Pizza Buffet with TONS of different types of pizza. It was awesome. Before Godfather's it was Andelin's Gable House! That location has some amazing history!
The Boat Chinese Restaurant:
I have NO CLUE what the real name of the Chinese Restaurant that was here in the mid 90's, but it SLAPPED! I used to go with my dad and sister every Tuesday night! It's now St. George Auto, located right next to the Picklr, formerly Rite Aid.
TwentyFive Main:
TwentyFive Main was a cute little cafe on Main Street in St. George. It's only been gone MAYBE two years, but a lot of people really enjoyed it. They had cupcakes, salads, sandwiches, pastas, and more. It was great, and it's missed!
Weinerschnitzel:
That's right, St. George used to have a Weinerschnitzel! I miss it so much, cheap hotdogs, chili cheese dogs, corndogs. It was good. It's currently La Botana on St. George Boulevard, next to PinkBox Donuts.
One Hot Grill:
One Hot Grill was a really cool burger place on Tabernacle close to Judd's. They had burgers, hotdogs, and sandwiches. It's currently Kairos Mediterranean.
Fazoli's:
Pasta? Yum. Drive-Thru's? Yum! That's what Fazoli's was. An Italian restaurant with a drive through. Fast food Italian food. It's now Five Guys, across from Chick-Fil-A on River Road.
Sconecutter:
I've seen a lot of people mention that they miss Sconecutter! Sconecutter was here for YEARS, and I never ever saw anyone inside. I was shocked they were in business. They weren't selling drugs right? I mean, their tagline was "Let's Get Sconed!"
Scaldoni's:
Confession! I've never been to Scaldoni's before, but SO MANY PEOPLE nominated this place, saying how much they missed it. I remember my aunt was a server there for a while! It was located in the Phoenix Plaza off of Sunset Boulevard.
Orange Julius:
Orange Julius was in the Food Court at the mall. The Food Court that LITERALLY doesn't exist anymore, directly outside of Bohme and Dillards. I miss you, Orange Julius.
Sizzler:
Yes, I know Cedar City still has Sizzler, but St. George used to have one too! Right on St. George Boulevard. The current location is home to Alta Bank and looks NOTHING like a Sizzler!
JB's:
St. George had a JB's, and even Hurricane had a JB's. It was like, a little Dennys, kind of... But they had a buffet! The breakfast buffet was MY FAVORITE! The JB's location is currently home to Black Bear Diner on Main Street & Bluff.
2 Fat Guys Pizza:
2 Fat Guys Pizza had a HORRIBLE location, but AMAZING pizza! It was in the little shopping center to the south of Walmart in Bloomington. Hungry Howies and Peppers Cantina are in the same spot that 2 Fat Guys used to be in. It was wood fired pizza, and delicious. After 2 Fat Guys left, MULTIPLE pizza places came into the same location and just couldn't make it work.
Charlie's:
Charlie's was a cute little restaurant that had ice cream, and soup, and sandwiches and always had a jukebox playing music. I miss Charlie's ALL THE TIME! Especially when I get sick. I miss that Chicken Noodle Soup. Charlie's location is now home to Swig on St. George Boulevard.
