Utah Is Home To THE WEIRDEST High School Mascots!
Maybe you went to a high school where the mascot was something normal. A tiger, an eagle, a wildcat, or a mustang. That's a little boring, right? Here in Utah, we have some high schools with TOTALLY WEIRD AND WILD mascots and they need to be recognized!
Winged Lions (Rowland Hall)
Rowland Hall is a private school in Salt Lake City. Their mascot is a WINGED LION. Not to be confused with a Griffin. A Griffin is a mythical creature with the body, tail, and back legs of a lion, but eagle head and eagle wings. No, no, no. Rowland Hall is the WINGED LION. A LION WITH WINGS. They're the only Winged Lion mascot in the entire United States.
Fighting Scots (Ben Lomond)
Ben Lomond High is located in Ogden, Utah. Their mascot is the FIGHTING SCOTS. Now, I like to imagine it's the "Fighting Scotts", just a bunch of guys named Scott fighting each other. But no, unfortunately it's Scottish people that are also fighting... Which isn't very bad either. Pretty weird though!
Phoenix (Farmington)
Farmington High is in Farmington, Utah, where you can find Lagoon! But here's the thing. A Phoenix is a pretty cool mascot, right? A Phoenix is an immortal bird that will rise from the ashes and be born again! But the REAL ISSUE HERE is the word for plural Phoenixes is actually "Phoenices" pronounced Fee-Niss-is. Sounding SHOCKINGLY like Penises. When the school was built a few years back, parents got together signing a petition to change the mascot because of the way "Phoenices" sounds. THAT'S AWESOME!
Buckaroos (Monticello)
At Monticello High school in Monticello, Utah, their mascot is the Buckaroos. Now, what is a Buckaroo? It's just a cowboy. But a Cowboy sounds WAY COOLER AND TOUGHER than a Buckaroo! I would have zero fear in a bunch of buckaroos!
Dons (Spanish Fork)
Here's another mascot that I want to be different. I wish it were a whole bunch of guys named Don, and that's the mascot! However... It's not. A Don is a Spanish title for men. Which is also confusing for the girls that attend Spanish Fork. They're the Dons too? The Donettes? The Donnas?
Beetdiggers (Jordan)
Another incredible mascot name here in Utah. Jordan High School in Salt Lake City. The Beetdiggers. Exactly the way it sounds. People that dig up beets from a garden. Beautiful.
Dinos (Carbon)
Carbon High School, located in Price, Utah is home to the Dinos! Not the Dinosaurs. Not a certain kind of dinosaur. Just the "Dinos". Obviously, it's very fitting for Price, Utah, where a lot of fossils have been found in the area.
Cavemen (American Fork)
Such an awesome mascot for American Fork. The Cavemen! Prehistoric. Unique. Interesting. I love it!
Darts (Davis)
At Davis High School in Kaysville, Utah, you'll find the Darts. What exactly is a Dart? Is it... A Dodge Dart? Is it the Dart that you throw at a dartboard? Is it when you light a fart on fire and call it a Blue Dart? The actual mascot is "Dart Man". This doesn't answer my questions at all now. I'm more confused on what a Dart is!
Beavers (Beaver)
Beaver, Utah, the home of all the "I Love Beaver" Bumper stickers, and t-shirts. Their mascot is the Beavers. Now, the Beaver isn't a weird mascot by any means, but when paired with "Beaver", it's a beautiful name. The Beaver Beavers. They HAD to do it! It's flawless.
